Your Lake's Trout Are Stuck in a Window of Water Barely Two Meters Deep. Here's Where.

Summer Trout Fishing: Best Depth When Lakes Warm Up

Every trout angler has a rough idea of summer trout fishing depth: fish "go deeper" once a lake warms up. A new study out of a small lake in Japan puts an actual number on how tight that deep-water window gets. Researchers tracked kokanee and rainbow trout in Lake Yunoko using a combination of hydroacoustic surveys, which ping fish with sound to count and locate them, and environmental DNA, or eDNA, water samples pulled at five different depths and tested for genetic traces the fish leave behind. Between June and November 2022, they found that by late summer the band of water offering suitable oxythermal habitat for kokanee had narrowed to as little as 1.68 meters, sitting roughly between 5.79 and 7.47 meters down.

What They Found

Lake Yunoko is small, a 0.32-square-kilometer lake with a maximum depth of 13.6 meters, and the researchers ran monthly surveys there from June through November 2022, combining hydroacoustic detections (4,902 fish individuals total) with eDNA sampling at 3, 5, 7, 9, and 11 meters, plus zooplankton sampling to track what the fish were eating. Kokanee eDNA showed up concentrated in the pockets of water with relatively favorable oxygen levels during summer, and fish density was consistently higher inside that suitable band than outside it from July through October at both survey sites. One site with higher dissolved oxygen showed higher kokanee eDNA concentrations than the other site from August through October. Rainbow trout eDNA didn't show that same site-to-site pattern. The mid-layer zooplankton that make up kokanee prey were up to 1.6 times denser at the lower-oxygen site during that same stretch, though the researchers note that difference wasn't statistically significant.

The Catch

This is one lake, one year of monthly snapshot surveys running June through November, not continuous monitoring. The authors are upfront that eDNA readings can be thrown off by water movement, how fast the DNA breaks down, and the limits of what the test can detect in the first place. They also only sampled during the day, so nothing here speaks to how fish move at night. And the authors are careful to call their findings "inherently correlational." Kokanee showed up where the oxygen was better. That's the finding. Whether the fish were actively avoiding low oxygen, or just couldn't survive outside that band and got filtered out, isn't something this study nails down.

Where to Actually Look for Summer Trout

I don't fish for kokanee, and most of my trout time is moving water in the Sierra Nevada, not a stillwater lake like this one, so I want to be honest that this isn't a situation I've fished myself. But the underlying idea lines up with things I have noticed on alpine lakes late in the season: by August, the water near the surface just doesn't feel like where the fish would want to be anymore, even before you factor in pressure from every other angler casting to the shallows. This study is a reminder that "fish are deeper in summer" isn't really the full picture. The band they're using might be narrow enough that being a few feet off it matters. If you've got a fish finder that shows a temperature or oxygen layer, that's worth paying more attention to on a hot August afternoon than just marking where the bottom is. This is one lake in Japan, not a rule for every trout lake you'll ever fish, but the number itself, a window potentially under two meters wide, is a useful gut-check next time "just fish deeper" doesn't produce anything.
